Professor John Okeniyi, the Chief Medical Director of Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital (OAUTH) in Ile-Ife, Osun State, has declared the removal of beds from offices in the hospital as a measure to address sexual harassment.
He explained that this measure is intended to reduce misconduct, especially toward female employees.
During a press briefing at the hospital complex, where he presented a progress report on his first year in office, Prof. Okeniyi stressed that having beds in offices, particularly under the pretext of night shifts, could encourage inappropriate sexual behaviour.
He mentioned that the organisation is implementing firm measures to tackle the problem.
Okeniyi said that individuals who cannot control their desires will have to face legal consequences. Additionally, beds will be removed from offices that are being used under the pretence of working night shifts.
Having beds in offices could lead to sexual harassment. From now on, Okeniyi will oversee the removal of beds from workspaces. The night shift is intended for employees to focus on their tasks and leave, not for sleeping.
He emphasised that the hospital has now put an anti-sexual harassment policy in place, making it clear that ignorance will no longer be tolerated as a justification for inappropriate conduct.
Okeniyi stated that the laws are clear and have been made known to the public: “You shall not sexually harass.” Therefore, ignorance is no longer an acceptable defence.
Creation of an Online “Wall of Shame” to Stop Sexual Harassment
Okeniyi stated that there would be an online “wall of shame” to publicly reveal offenders, making their actions visible to friends, family, and the general public.
He stated that if anyone takes such actions, the next step will be to impose a deterrent punishment. Those responsible will be held accountable, and the issue will not be ignored.
