The Nigerian Association of Technologists in Engineering (NATE) has urged for the full recognition of polytechnic graduates in Nigeria, highlighting concerns over the increasing marginalisation of polytechnic education.
This call was made during an induction and awards presentation ceremony held in collaboration with the Faculty of Engineering at The Polytechnic of Ibadan. The event took place on Thursday in Ibadan, emphasising the importance of valuing polytechnic qualifications in the engineering sector.
Dr. D.A. Oke, the Head of the Faculty of Engineering at the Polytechnic of Ibadan, voiced concerns at an event themed ‘The Emerging Technologist’ about the growing trend of converting polytechnics into universities in Nigeria. He highlighted how this contrasts with countries like Germany and China, where the trend is the opposite—universities are being converted into polytechnics. Dr Oke expressed that this shift in Nigeria could hinder technological development.
On The Importance of Polytechnics
He emphasised that polytechnic graduates play a crucial role in nation-building, and their contribution is vital to the country’s advancement in technology.
He expressed regret that the Nigerian government fails to properly acknowledge polytechnic graduates, which goes against the initial vision of the founders who created these institutions.
Oke emphasised that, as professionals, they are responsible for ensuring they gain recognition. They need to set themselves apart from impostors and remain honest, dependable, and dedicated to contributing to the nation’s development.
Oke acknowledged the contributions of polytechnic graduates, highlighting the example of the Oyo State anthem, which was composed by the music department of The Polytechnic of Ibadan during the tenure of the late Governor Abiola Ajimobi.
In his keynote speech, Dalco Group Chairman Soji Longe encouraged the new inductees to prioritise unity and teamwork.
Addressing the theme, “Connecting the Professional Body with the Alumni Association,” he urged the newly qualified professionals to exchange knowledge, safeguard their shared interests, and explore wider opportunities by building robust alumni networks.
Remarks From The President of NATE
In an earlier speech, the National President of the Nigerian Association of Technologists in Engineering (NATE), Dominic Udoatan, represented by Vice President Oluremi Tokede, highlighted that the fast-paced progress in technology presents significant opportunities to boost Nigeria’s economic growth, emphasising that the decisions made now will influence the country’s future direction.
Udoatan praised the creativity and dedication of the new inductees, urging them to use their expertise to make valuable contributions to societal development. He also encouraged the Oyo State chapter of NATE to keep driving innovation that supports economic sustainability, ensuring Nigeria takes full advantage of emerging technological advancements.
