Lagos Teacher who Abused 3-Year-Old Pupil Faces Indefinite Suspension

Christ Mitots School, located in Ikorodu, Lagos State, has taken decisive action by indefinitely suspending a teacher, Stella Nwadigo, after she was caught on video assaulting a three-year-old pupil, Abayomi Michael. The incident occurred during a numeracy lesson, and the video, which quickly went viral on social media, has sparked widespread outrage and condemnation from the public.

The disturbing video showed Nwadigo slapping the young child multiple times simply because he was struggling with the lesson. Following the public outcry, the teacher was arrested on January 8, 2025. In response to the incident, the school issued a statement condemning the teacher’s actions, describing them as entirely unacceptable and completely incompatible with the principles and values upheld by the institution.

The management emphasised that the behavior displayed in the video is not only unprofessional but also goes against the core ethos of the school, which prioritises creating a safe, supportive, and nurturing environment for all its students. Such conduct, they stated, would not be tolerated under any circumstances.

To address the situation, the school confirmed that the teacher involved has been suspended indefinitely while a comprehensive investigation is carried out. The school reiterated its zero-tolerance stance toward any form of misconduct, particularly actions that threaten the safety, welfare, and well-being of students.

Other Actions Taken By The School

In addition to suspending the teacher, the school offered a formal apology to the family of the victim, expressing deep regret for the distress caused by the incident. The school management assured the family of their unwavering support throughout this difficult time and committed to ensuring that justice is served and appropriate measures are implemented.

To prevent similar incidents in the future, the school announced several proactive steps. These include mandatory training programs for all teachers, focusing on positive disciplinary techniques and child protection protocols. Furthermore, the school introduced a confidential whistle-blowing system to enable staff, parents, and students to report any inappropriate behavior promptly and without fear of reprisal.

The management also emphasised its determination to foster a culture rooted in mutual respect, empathy, and care. They pledged to make the necessary reforms to strengthen these values and to ensure that the school remains a safe and nurturing environment for all its pupils. Through these measures, the institution aims to rebuild trust with parents, guardians, and the wider community while demonstrating its commitment to the highest standards of care and professionalism.
