The Lagos State Government has introduced the Eko Learners’ Support initiative for students preparing for the West African Examination Council (WAEC) and National Examination Council (NECO) exams. The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Alli-Balogun, announced the program during its launch at the Education Resource Centre in Lagos on January 14, 2025.
He explained that the program is a holistic initiative aimed at supporting WAEC and NECO candidates in achieving academic success in their external exams.
Alli-Balogun stated that the initiative includes 320 pre-recorded lessons covering 10 subjects: English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Economics, Government, History, Literature-in-English, and Yoruba.
Remarks From The Commissioner
The commissioner revealed that the lessons would be aired on Lagos Television and shared across various social media platforms, featuring skilled teachers who have passed thorough evaluations. The program is scheduled to run for 26 weeks, with each episode lasting 30 minutes, and will be stored on platforms like YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter) for convenient access.
He added that the lessons would remain permanently available on social media after their television broadcast. The commissioner highlighted that the initiative was created to allow candidates to interact with the resources privately, provide feedback, and ask questions. He stated that candidates were encouraged to form collaborative forums with their teachers and peers to foster mutual support and improve academic performance.
According to him, the initiative aims to motivate learners and candidates to inspire one another for better results. The lessons are designed in alignment with the Lagos State Government’s approved Scheme of Work and the WAEC and NECO syllabus. Alli-Balogun urged students to make the most of the program, reminding them that education is a lifelong journey and reaffirming the state government’s dedication to supporting them throughout.
The News Agency of Nigeria noted that this initiative reflects the state government’s commitment to delivering quality education. It builds on the success of previous programs like EKOEXCEL, which has gained international recognition, including being featured at the Education World Forum for its innovative educational strategies.
