Kingsley Moghalu, former deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has been named the inaugural president of the African School of Governance (ASG). Mahktar Diop, managing director of the International Finance Corporation (IFC), expressed confidence that Moghalu’s leadership will propel ASG’s academic and research efforts.
Diop highlighted that Moghalu will be responsible for shaping the institution’s academic direction, focusing on programs that address the intricate governance issues across the continent. This announcement was made by the African School of Governance Foundation (ASGF) in a statement on Monday.
Diop expressed enthusiasm over Kingsley Moghalu’s joining as president of the African School of Governance. He highlighted Moghalu’s impressive leadership experience in both international and national policymaking, as well as his academic contributions and thought leadership. Diop believes Moghalu’s influence will help shape ASG into a transformative graduate institution, fostering a new generation of leaders equipped with the skills and mindset needed to tackle Africa’s 21st-century challenges.
With direction from the Governing Board, Moghalu will prioritise attracting top African faculty, promoting academic excellence, and establishing ASG as a centre for intellectual and policy innovation. Diop noted that the Kigali-based institution will unite visionary leaders dedicated to developing a sustainable governance model grounded in Africa’s unique realities.

He stated that prominent African leaders have united in this groundbreaking initiative, which aims to reshape the continent’s leadership landscape by addressing the varied needs of leaders across Africa. He also emphasised that ASG seeks to tackle Africa’s critical governance issues by preparing emerging leaders with the necessary mindsets, skills, and knowledge for effective leadership in the continent’s future.
In a post on X, Moghalu expressed his excitement about the appointment, sharing that he is honoured to have been invited by African leaders and others to serve as President of the newly founded African School of Governance.
