Godfrey Okoye University (GOUNI) is set to commemorate a historic milestone at its 12th convocation ceremony on Saturday, November 16, 2024. During this event, the university will award first-class honours to 27 students—the largest number of top-tier graduates in its history. This achievement is part of a broader celebration, with a total of 546 students graduating.
Convocation Highlights
At a press briefing in Enugu, following a 22 km marathon held as part of the convocation celebrations, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Christian Anieke highlighted the outstanding accomplishments of the graduating class. Prof. Anieke announced that of the 546 students graduating, 27 earned first-class honours—the most the university has awarded in a year.
Latest Achievements
Prof. Anieke emphasised key advancements at GOUNI, including the launch of a new nursing school approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria. With this addition, the university now offers 83 programs in total, comprising 40 undergraduate and 43 postgraduate courses.
Additionally, GOUNI has established an oxygen plant to supply hospitals statewide and created Africa’s first DNA learning centre. The Vice-Chancellor also revealed that the university’s College of Medicine recently gained accreditation from the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, allowing the commencement of MBBS examinations.
The first cohort of medical students, currently in their third year, will take their second MBBS exams in March next year. The admission quota for the medicine program has been increased to 75, making GOUNI the first Nigerian university to conduct two MBBS exams in the second year.
