The Nigerian government has authorised the printing and distribution of one million science textbooks for secondary schools across the country’s 774 local government areas. Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Heineken Lokpobiri, announced this on Wednesday during a briefing to State House Correspondents following the Federal Executive Council meeting led by President Bola Tinubu.
Lokpobiri noted that the proposal was presented to the Council on behalf of the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF). The textbook distribution is aimed at supporting the PTDF’s mission, which focuses on enhancing the capacity of Nigerians in the oil and gas sector.
He further explained that the PTDF’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) initiative acknowledges Nigeria’s gaps in subjects such as physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, and computer science.
He mentioned that the PTDF STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Program was established to address Nigeria’s shortcomings in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, and computer science.
He explained that to align with global standards, it was necessary to strengthen capacity at the secondary school level. The program aims to print one million science textbooks for distribution across all 774 local government areas in the country and to provide support for the 104 unity schools and 122 special schools already established in the nation.
