Godfrey Okoye University (GOUNI), Enugu, has increased the minimum qualification requirement for its lecturers to a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), effective from the 2025-2026 academic session.
The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Christian Anieke, announced on Friday during a “Spiritual Retreat” for academic and senior administrative staff that those with lower degrees must upgrade their qualifications or be prepared to leave their positions. He clarified that this directive aligns with the National Universities Commission’s guidelines.
He stated that graduate assistants would not be permitted to teach alone in the classroom unless the necessary lecturers were present. Emphasising the importance of mentorship, the Vice-Chancellor cautioned staff against misusing the mentorship program. He also declared that the university’s management would no longer tolerate lecturers missing their classes.
Remarks From the Deputy VC
In her remarks, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. MarySylvia Nwachukwu, expressed concern over the poor attendance of lecturers during the first week of the academic session. She mentioned that the university’s academic monitorship committee would enhance the supervision of lectures to identify and take necessary actions against those who fail to show up for their duties.
During a spiritual reflection at the retreat, the Guest Speaker, Rev. Fr. Liberatus Isife, highlighted that the success of any educational institution relies on the knowledge imparted to students. As a Department of Philosophy and Religion member, Isife emphasised the importance of reflecting on the past and striving for positive change.
He pointed out that a lack of self-development and failure to update lecture materials are key barriers to productivity, stressing that these issues could be addressed through stronger dedication to work.
The retreat was attended by top university officials, professors, department heads, and directors from the university and its affiliated institutions.
