The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has suspended another lecturer, Dr. Joseph Idung from the Science Laboratory Technology Department, as part of a series of ongoing suspensions at the institution. According to a suspension letter from Registrar Gabriel Egbe, Dr. Idung failed to return money collected from students for their induction into the Nigerian Institute of Science Laboratory Technology (NISLT).
This action follows the recent suspension and dismissal of Dr. Joseph Akpan, the Acting Head of the Pharmacology Department. Dr. Akpan was found to have altered exam scores for the PHM 311 course (Introduction to General Antimicrobial Pharmacology), as revealed by the Senate Examination Misconduct Committee (SEMC).The administration voiced its disappointment with Dr. Joseph Idung for refusing to return the allegedly extorted money.
The suspension letter explains that Vice-Chancellor Professor Florence Obi has directed his suspension from university duties so he can appear before the Anti-Corruption and Transparency Monitoring Unit (ACTU), which is responsible for investigating the matter.
Dr. Idung has also been ordered to return all university property in his possession to the Head of the Department and to stay off campus unless called by ACTU. Moreover, the letter instructs the Bursar to place Dr. Idung on half salary during the suspension.
