Anchor University Lagos’ Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Samuel Bandele, has reiterated the institution’s firm policy against improper conduct on campus. He emphasised that the university maintains a zero-tolerance approach to such behaviour and will not tolerate or cover up any infractions.
In a statement issued on Monday, Bandele addressed a recent incident in which a student, Evangel Ganiyu, claimed on social media that an artisan hired for renovation work in the women’s hostel attempted to assault her while she was asleep sexually.
Bandele condemned the act, assuring the public that the suspect is currently in police custody at the Ayobo Police Station and will face legal proceedings to determine his innocence or guilt.
The Vice-Chancellor dismissed the rumours suggesting the university would try to cover up the incident, stressing the institution’s dedication to justice and transparency. He affirmed that Anchor University operates with integrity, guided by the fear of God and in full compliance with the law. The notion that they would protect a suspect in such a serious matter is unfounded.
Bandele explained that the suspect was not an employee but a contractor hired for renovation work in the female hostel.
Bandele clarified that the artisan involved had been hired by his supervisor, who was contracted to perform renovation work and dismissed the claim that the university would cover up the incident as baseless.
He also responded to Ganiyu’s accusations, stating that this was the first time he had encountered a case like this. He encouraged students with similar experiences to come forward, assuring them that the university would conduct a thorough investigation. When the Female Hall Supervisor, Mrs Grace Abodunde, brought Evangel to his office, he asked crucial questions to verify her claims before officially reporting the case to the police.
How the University Maintains Discipline
Bandele added that during the initial inquiry, Ganiyu appeared reluctant, which prompted him to emphasise the importance of addressing the matter seriously. He noted that the university acted swiftly and responsibly, and the Ayobo police are now handling the case.
The Vice-Chancellor also highlighted the university’s efforts to maintain discipline and ensure student safety. As part of their commitment to high ethical standards, they require all female students to undergo pregnancy tests upon admission and conduct random drug tests to ensure students are not involved in drug-related issues. He affirmed that the university does not hesitate to take disciplinary action when necessary.
Bandele emphasised that Anchor University is focused on education and moral development, not a place for students who lack seriousness. The institution’s mission is to shape students into responsible adults who can make meaningful contributions to society by the grace of God.
Mrs. Abodunde, the Hall Supervisor, supported the Vice-Chancellor’s statements, confirming that this was the first time Ganiyu had reported such an incident. She denied claims that the university downplayed sexual harassment and confirmed that they acted promptly after the matter was brought to her attention, immediately escalating it to the authorities, who took swift action.
