Babcock University in Ilisan-Remo, Ogun State, has celebrated the graduation of a new group of medical doctors. A total of 93 graduates were inducted into the medical profession during the university’s ninth induction ceremony, conducted on campus.
The registrar of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), Dr. Fatima Kyari, was represented by Professor Olusegun Akinyinka, who administered the oath of allegiance to the graduates. In her address to the graduates, including Treasure Nnaji, who earned the title of overall best with nine distinctions, the registrar of the MDCN emphasised the importance of staying focused and dedicated as they advance in their careers. She cautioned them against engaging in unethical practices, stating that any practitioner who violates professional ethics will face appropriate consequences.
She acknowledged that while a career in medicine may not always be financially rewarding, medical practitioners are held in high esteem in society for their role in preserving lives and contributing to humanity. She encouraged them to challenge themselves, noting that they have gained valuable knowledge and that it is time to apply it in real-world situations.
Dr. Kyari advised the graduates to prioritise integrity in their professional lives. They should demonstrate a positive attitude, work diligently, and seek a second opinion when needed.
Moreover, they must avoid any form of corruption, serve as positive role models, show compassion, and maintain strict confidentiality with their patients. The registrar also encouraged them to pursue further studies abroad but emphasised the importance of returning home to contribute to the advancement of the medical profession.
She mentioned that the expense of training in Nigeria is substantial, suggesting that they should consider transforming the brain drain issue into a brain gain opportunity for the country.
