Former Vice Chancellor of UI Appointed As  Pro-Chancellor

Prof. Idowu Olayinka, former Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan (UI), has been appointed as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of West Midlands Open University, Ibadan. 

He was inaugurated alongside the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Olumide Babatope Longe; Senate Representative, Air Commodore (Dr.) Akeem Adebomehin; Convocation Representative, Prof. Adenike Osofisan; Mrs. Bisi Asimolowo; Mrs. Deola Ajayi; the National Universities Commission (NUC) representative, Dr. Ligari Gabriel Hadu; and the Registrar, Adekunle Durosinmi, who also serves as the Council’s Secretary.

In his address after the inauguration, Olayinka expressed concern over the country’s persistent high illiteracy rates, particularly in rural areas. He emphasised the importance of distance learning in addressing this issue, highlighting its potential to provide flexible and accessible education options to a broader audience.

Remarks From The New VC

Prof. Longe, the Vice Chancellor, pledged the institution’s commitment to delivering education that is both accessible and impactful. He noted that the university aims to offer affordable, high-quality, and relevant programs designed to foster Nigeria’s socio-economic and technological development. 

According to Longe, West Midlands Open University seeks to redefine the educational landscape by providing lifelong learning opportunities that empower individuals and communities. Earlier, the university’s founder, Oba Adebayo Akande, the Ekarun Olubadan of Ibadanland, described the institution as a platform dedicated to nurturing future leaders and promoting academic excellence.

He expressed optimism about its potential impact on education in Nigeria and beyond. The Visitor of the university offered prayers for the success of the governing council members as they embark on their new responsibilities.
