The Registrar of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), Mr. Mansur Adeleke Alfanla, has called on the federal government to create a single agency to oversee the finances of public universities.
He emphasized that the current involvement of multiple government bodies in this role is counterproductive and leads to inconsistencies in their findings. In a recent interview, Alfanla argued that establishing a dedicated body would prevent these discrepancies caused by the differing positions of various agencies. He expressed dissatisfaction with the current system, noting that a centralized agency would resolve these issues.
He pointed out that the issue lies in multiple agencies overseeing the same function. It is frustrating to have several bodies handling this task, as it is counterproductive and sets progress back. Alfanla believes there should be a single designated agency to manage this responsibility on behalf of the federal government, rather than spreading it across multiple agencies, which often results in inconsistencies.
Other Problems Facing Public Varsities
Alfanla also expressed concern about the insufficient funding for public institutions, acknowledging that financial challenges are another major issue they face. While he recognised the lack of funds, he remains optimistic that the situation will improve. Regarding security at the University of Ilorin, he criticised the actions of some cattle herders who trespass onto the campus, damaging crops, farmlands, and other property.
He shared that he had personally experienced this issue. Five officials had cultivated eight hectares of land for beans, and the crops were thriving. However, during the harvest, the herders arrived and destroyed everything with their cattle.
He expressed concern over the ongoing brain drain in public institutions nationwide and urged the government to take measures to address the issue. Acknowledging the government’s role in these challenges, Alfanla encouraged lecturers to be patient and stressed the importance of their sacrifices for the country to get back on track.
He also praised the University of Ilorin’s management for its active engagement with labour unions and its focus on staff welfare, which has contributed to efficient service and uninterrupted academic sessions. He highlighted that, for the first time in the country, the university recently introduced a 25% waiver on school fees for staff members’ biological children, a benefit that was implemented last year and is being continued this year.
