UNESCO and Infinix Partner to Train Nigerian Teachers and Students in AI and Robotics

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), in collaboration with Infinix Nigeria and Google, recently launched a two-day training program on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and robotics for Nigerian teachers and students. The event at the UNESCO office in Abuja marked a significant step towards enhancing digital literacy and capacity building in Nigeria’s education sector.

At the program, Abdourahamane Diallo, UNESCO Head in Abuja, highlighted the pivotal role of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics STEM education in driving sustainable development. He noted that STEM education equips learners with the skills needed to tackle pressing global issues such as climate change and public health challenges.

“Despite its importance, many sub-Saharan African countries face limitations, including outdated curricula, poorly equipped laboratories, and inadequate teacher training,” Diallo stated. He emphasised the potential of AI, robotics, and cloud computing to revolutionise STEM education and address these challenges.

The training program, the first in a planned series, aimed to empower Nigerian teachers and students with foundational knowledge and hands-on experience in AI and robotics. Diallo announced that the next phase of the initiative would incorporate 3D printing to expand the scope of learning further.

Oluwayemisi Ode, Public Relations Manager for Infinix Nigeria, described the program as a critical step towards sparking innovation among Nigeria’s youth. “Through hands-on training, we aim to inspire curiosity and creativity while preparing the next generation of problem-solvers and innovators,” Ode said. She added that the initiative is designed to reach students across Nigeria, including rural areas, ensuring inclusive access to digital education.

Dr. Olagunju Idowu, Secretary General of the UNESCO National Commission in Nigeria, commended the program’s timeliness, stressing the transformative impact of AI in various sectors. Other stakeholders, including representatives from the Federal Ministry of Education, underscored the importance of STEM education in ensuring Nigeria’s competitiveness on the global stage.
The workshop, supported by UNESCO, Infinix, and Google, is poised to play a vital role in equipping Nigeria’s youth and educators with the digital tools necessary to thrive in a rapidly evolving world.
