In a heartwarming move to support the next generation, OPay, Nigeria’s top financial service provider, has granted ₦12 million in scholarships to 40 deserving students at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria.
Each recipient will receive ₦300,000, helping alleviate financial burdens and encouraging them to continue their education confidently. The scholarship presentation took place at the Vice-Chancellor’s office at ABU and was a significant moment for both OPay and the students.
Mr Dauda Gotring, Managing Director of OPay and an ABU graduate expressed the personal significance of supporting students at the university that played a key role in his journey.

OPay emphasised that supporting society, particularly through education, is a core value of their mission. Gotring shared that ABU holds a significant place in his heart and is excited to assist the university’s students who demonstrate great potential and dedication.
ABU’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kabiru Bala, expressed sincere thanks for the scholarships, highlighting the positive impact they will have on the students’ lives. He noted that OPay’s contribution would ease the students’ financial burdens, allowing them to focus more on their academic aspirations. ABU is deeply appreciative of OPay’s generosity and partnership.
OPay’s new initiative is set to support 400 students each year across Nigerian universities, including the University of Ibadan and Nnamdi Azikiwe University, with an annual investment of ₦120 million to help more young people succeed. This decade-long commitment will significantly impact Nigerian education, fostering future leaders and providing opportunities for students in need.
OPay’s efforts to uplift communities extend beyond education, as the organisation is also engaging in discussions and planning initiatives to empower women in Zaria through entrepreneurship programs, startup assistance, and skills development. By focusing on both education and economic empowerment, OPay aims to create a ripple effect of positive change that strengthens local communities and economies.
