No fewer than 49 final-year Higher National Diploma (HND) students of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY) are at risk of expulsion after a recent result verification exercise uncovered the alleged submission of fake National Diploma (ND) certificates.
The polytechnic, in a detailed update on its result verification process, revealed that the students in question had reportedly presented fraudulent ND results while applying for admission into the HND programs of the institution.
In a two-phase list published by the institution, the implicated students were identified across multiple departments, including Mass Communication, Pharmaceutical Technology, Marketing, Science Laboratory Technology, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, and Accountancy, among others.
The fraudulent ND results were allegedly sourced from several other institutions, including The Polytechnic, Ibadan; The Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro; Adeseun Ogundoyin Polytechnic, Eruwa; and Ibarapa Polytechnic, Eruwa, all located in Oyo State.
This development has raised concerns about academic integrity and the need for stricter measures to verify qualifications during admission processes.
Earlier this week, Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY) announced the indefinite closure of the institution in response to a planned protest by its students.
Remarks From The PRO
The polytechnic’s Public Relations Officer, Yemi Ajibola, clarified that the verification process, which led to the discovery of the alleged use of fake results, is a standard and routine procedure designed to validate the authenticity of academic documents submitted by students during their admission process.
According to Ajibola, the polytechnic has well-established internal mechanisms for cross-checking and verifying the credentials provided by all admitted students. He explained that some results were still undergoing verification because the institutions where they were issued had not yet confirmed their authenticity. Meanwhile, some other results were discovered to be fraudulent after thorough scrutiny.
This situation underscores the importance of maintaining academic integrity and ensuring that only genuinely qualified students are granted admission into the polytechnic.
The polytechnic acknowledged that a backlog of results had accumulated due to certain administrative challenges, which caused delays in the verification process. Efforts are currently underway to address these issues promptly and ensure the process is completed.
It was also noted that students found with fake results would not face immediate expulsion. Instead, they would be given an opportunity to appear before the institution and provide justification or evidence to support the authenticity of their documents.
However, any student who fails to validate their submitted results will face expulsion from the polytechnic.
